TOWN HALL, RANDOLPH, MASS – The Randolph community celebrated its 3rd Annual Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Flag Raising ceremony held on the grounds of Town Hall, Randolph on Saturday, June 12th, 2021. The ceremony observed a Proclamation originally issued by President George W. Bush on June 6, 2006 recognizing June as National Caribbean-American Heritage Month.
The ceremony was organized by Randolph South Shore Caribbean Connection chaired by local resident Janil Stephens and supported by town councilors Ken Clifton, Katrina Huff-Larmond, Jesse Gordon and town manager Brian Howard.
A keynote address was given by Caribbean-born town councilor Ken Clifton who emphasized the historical relations between the Caribbean and the United States and the bonds of friendship that exist today. “Caribbean Americans fought gallantly side-by-side with the U.S. Military in every American conflict since before the Revolutionary War of 1776,” said Clifton. “Prominent Caribbean Americans also included Alexander Hamilton born on the island of Nevis and today, a daughter of a Caribbean American, Kamala Harris, sits as Vice President of the United States,” continued Clifton.
“As one of the most diverse communities in the Commonwealth, it is critical we welcome and celebrate our spirit of inclusivity, embrace opportunities to recognize our diversity and foster unity amongst all cultures in our community,” said Clifton. “I am so proud of the social progress Randolph is making as we continue to unite together as a community of kindness,” he concluded.
In brief remarks, town manager Brian Howard recognized Caribbean Americans for their contributions to Randolph in various areas including leadership. A town council Proclamation recognizing the significance of Caribbean people in the history and culture of the United States was presented by town councilor Jesse Gordon. In introducing a dance performance by Stagez Cultural Arts Center, councilor Katrina Huff-Larmond spoke of the sterling contributions of Caribbean people in arts, culture and other facets of society.
In presenting the vote of thanks, key organizer Janil Stephens acknowledged the town leadership for its full support and thanked Stagez, Steel pan players, other performers and all the residents who came out to show their support for this important ceremony.
